For people planning a 40th or 50th birthday, try something different.  Instead of your normal adult party, try a traditional kids party, where your friends and family have to dress as they did when they were 5-6. This way, you can eat jelly and ice cream, play your favorite party games that you know you want to join in with when you take your son/daughter to their friends party, without feeling silly.  Enjoy strawberry jam sandwiches, chocolate biscuits and your favorite crisps. This means that you don't run up too large a bill when buying food.
