My husband and I lived in the UK for a while and I planned to surprise him with a trip
back there for his 30th birthday present. I developed a surprise party around this theme. I created invitations that featured a photoshopped picture of my husband with a top hat and monocle in front of the English flag that said, By George Mike is turning 30!" Inside I instructed guests to arrive to the party in a costume of any British person real or fictional. For food I made Shepherd's Pie casseroles "chips" (french fries) and mushy peas. I also bought some cookies and snacks imported from the UK. We served British beers and sodas available overseas for drinks. I decorated the cake with the St. George's cross from the English flag. Party decorations were all red and white to correspond with the cake. I also bought some flags of England and the UK along with a small metal British phone booth for the table centerpiece. I hung a sign right inside the door (so it could be seen as guests entered) which was a recreation of the Welcome to Heathrow Airport sign inside arrival/departure terminals. I also made a "Happy Birthday" sign with the English flag as the background. All of the guests got into the spirit of the party and dressed accordingly. Some examples of who came to the party include: Sherlock Holmes Queen Elizabeth II Julie Andrews Bridget Jones Ozzy Osbourne Elton John Dr. Who Mary Poppins and Burt and many many football (soccer) fanatics! Even our 2 year old son was dressed as a punk rocker! The party was a huge success and the surprise went off without a hitch."
